What Happens When You Pile Up The US National Debt In $1 bills?

Here’s a question that I bet you’ve never asked yourself but I’m here to provide some useless (but fun) ways to visualise the ridonkulous US National Debt.

As we watch the US National Debt tick over the 35 trillion dollar mark, let’s look at how things have changed since the gold standard ended in 1971. The debt in 1971 was $424,131 million and now we’re at a whopping $35 trillion which is 82.5x increase over a 53 year period.

The debt is growing at an unprecedented rate, and if this trend continues, it’s projected to reach $46 trillion by 2028.

Now let’s put these numbers into perspective.

Updated daily from the US Treasury

My personal favourite is stacking $1 bills to reach the moon AND BACK nearly 5 times. This would be 10 stacks of $1 bills touching the moon. WILD!

And there you have it, some useless facts about the US National Debt.

Happy (or not so happy) 35 trillion dollar day!🫣 Want to learn how National Debt Works? We have a blog for that.
